Ontario Winter Games 2023 set for February 2-5 & February 9-12, 2023!

Originally scheduled for early 2022, the games were postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, with the Games now being held during the first two weekends of February 2023 – Feb. 2-5 and Feb. 9-12.

“Mark your calendars and be prepared to enjoy the best of Ontario winter youth athletic competitions,” said Renfrew County Coun. Peter Emon, Chair of the Ontario Winter Games organizing committee, in a release issued by the county. “This will be an opportunity to see future National team and Olympic/Paralympic athletes competing right here in Renfrew County.”

The Ontario government is providing $1.4 million to support the games.

“This will boost the local economy, attract visitors from across the province, engage volunteers, develop sport and recreation locally, and leave a lasting legacy in the community,” said Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries. “I am delighted the County of Renfrew will get the opportunity to host the Ontario Winter Games in 2023.”

Emon noted Minister MacLeod and her staff have been wonderful partners.

“They continue to support our large team of volunteers as we plan the delivery of the ‘Best Games Ever’ here in Renfrew County,” he added.

The games will draw more than 3,000 young athletes, coaches and officials from across Ontario to compete in 22 individual sports.  Families, fans and friends will be able to watch the competitions and enjoy the many wonderful and unique amenities Renfrew County has to offer.

Ottawa Valley culture, heritage and community pride will be on display throughout the event weekends, enticing the approximately 3,500 visitors to experience life in this magnificent part of eastern Ontario.

“The games will be an opportunity for county residents to watch the best of youth athletic competition in our arenas, curling clubs, pools, gymnasiums, cross-country and downhill ski trails and resorts,” said Renfrew County Warden Debbie Robinson.  “I am also anticipating that the grand opening ceremonies will be an extravaganza, call it our mini Olympic Games experience, and I look forward to sharing it with everyone.”

The competition venues will be located throughout Renfrew County, enabling organizers to showcase many of the county’s 17 municipalities, according to Emon, who also credits the efforts of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski for ensuring the games came to the county in 2023.

“MPP John Yakabuski has been a champion for us on this project from the outset and we appreciate his ongoing support and encouragement,” the chairman said.

More information to come in future releases.
